Some Medications Do More Harm Than Good

Patients with CMT need to be knowledgeable of the adverse side effects of some medications. These side effects vary from small reaction to complete toxicity. Personally, after giving birth to our first child, my blood pressure skyrocketed. It was treated by a drug with adverse effects for CMT patients. As if the childbirth wasn't enough, my medical team and I were dealing with the effects of the reaction that lasted an additional 24 hours following my 20 hour child labor.

The Charcot Marie Tooth Association, CMTA has a helpful page dedicated to medications neurotoxic to CMT patients. They even have some helpful documents to download. The most important thing is to carry a list of medications with adverse effects with you and to make sure your caregivers have a copy of that list to maintain on file.
